(Newswire.net — October 15, 2017) — US senators joined public criticism on President Donald Trump’s intention to unilaterally exit the Iran nuclear agreement, which is characterized as a ’drift towards war.’

Trump’s decision to decertify the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, sparked harsh criticism from US Democrats. During a press conference on Friday, Nancy Pelosi (D-California) stressed that the US president’s announcement to break the JCPOA agreement is a „grave mistake.“

“I say the Iran nuclear agreement was the best way to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear armed state,” Pelosi said. “The president, I think, is being frivolous with this,” said Pelosi who worked hand-in-hand with the administration of former President Barack Obama to pass the JCPOA back in 2015.

Representative Adam Schiff (D-California) and Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont), tweeted strongly against Trump’s position on the agreement, urging President Trump to “stop this drift toward war.”

Arguing his position and intentions on the JCPOA agreement US President Trump claimed that Iran is breaking the agreement so there is no obligation for the US to stay committed to the deal. Saudi Arabia and Israel backed Trump’s decision to withdraw the US signature from the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) and continue tormenting Iran with sanctions.

Among other countries that signed the agreement, not only Russia but also the strongest US allies such as France and the UK, they however, refuted Trump’s allegations claiming that Iran is not breaking the agreement. Even Trump’s officials stated that Iranians stick to what they signed.

“Trump’s own top security officials say Iran is meeting its commitments under the deal and that it is in the security interests of the US,” tweeted Bernie Sanders, who supported the JCPOA agreement even if it is not “a perfect agreement,” as he said.

“Congress should listen to what virtually the entire national security community is saying – that the Iran deal is working – and protect it,” Sanders tweeted. Senator Sanders also said that the alternative to the Iran nuclear deal is a war.

The US democrats are aligned with the opinion of the US allies and UN countries that signed the Iran nuclear deal that US breaking the JCPOA would have far reaching consequences.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned Donald Trump’s refusal to adhere to the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, Russia Today reports. According to Moscow, not only that the move exposes the US as an unreliable partner, but poses a threat to international security and nuclear non-proliferation.

While EU, China and Russia agree that US exiting from JCPOA would only reinforce the belief of other countries, such as North Korea, that there is “no sense in negotiations” with the US, the Republican-controlled Congress will now have 60 days to decide whether to reimpose sanctions against Iran.
