(Newswire.net — October 20, 2017) –“If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet,” wrote actress Alyssa Milano on Twitter on October 15th, and more than 53,000 women, and even some men had replied to the tweet by Monday morning.

Thousands of others have posted the same words on their Facebook and Instagram profiles, too.

Some of them just wrote: “Nobody knows. #Me too,’’ but there are those who posted in comments their personal stories of rape and sexual harassment.

One woman wrote: “They are not always strangers or colleagues who are harassed. I’ve experienced it from my friends and friends, MeToo.”

The hashtag was tweeted nearly a million times in 48 hours, according to Twitter.

Alyssa Milano says that her idea was to overcome the story of Harvey Weinstein, and to focus on victims rather than perpetrators of the crimes, and to highlight how many women are still victims.

The actress also said that she has her own “Me Too” story, but she decided not to share it with everyone because she wanted to focus on others.

She explained that the hashtag #MeToo ‘’is giving women the opportunity to come forward without having to go into detail about their stories if they don’t want to.”

Some famous women and high-profile actors have also tweeted the words MeToo: Anna Paquin, who has starred in multiple films from the X-Men franchise, Debra Messing of Will & Grace and Laura Dreyfuss.

Lauren Taylor, actress and singer who also shared her own #Me too story, said she hopes that “Me Too” grows into something more than a passing hashtag.

The cause for all this is an ongoing case of Hollywood movie producer Harvey Weinstein who faces allegations of sexual misconduct from more than two dozen women and three accusations of rape, over the past 10 years.

Among his victims are some Hollywood A-listers including names such as Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The investigation is ongoing, but 65-year-old movie-mogul was kicked out of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
