(Newswire.net — October 31, 2017) Woodbridge, VA — The spookiest night of the year is coming up, when hordes of children descend upon darkened neighborhood streets in search of treats. Don’t fall victim to any tricks this year, stay safe on Halloween by following these health, safety, and first aid tips.

  • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit comfortably, and that costumes fit properly to prevent tripping or tangling.
  • Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat buckets for greater visibility.
  • As masks can limit eyesight, instead use non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit snugly on the head to prevent them from sliding over eyes. Use makeup which is nontoxic and has been tested beforehand for any allergies. The goal is that children should be able to walk, see, and hear as usual while wearing their costumes.
  • Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups and with at least one trusted adult escort.
  • Only approach homes that have their porch lights on. Never enter a home or a car to get treats.
  • Trick-or-treat in well-lit areas, walk on sidewalks (if there are no sidewalks, walk as far from the road as possible and in the direction facing traffic) and cross streets only at crosswalks. Make sure to have a first aid kit with you in case any too eager children trip, fall, or otherwise hurt themselves in the excitement.
  • Stay visible as it starts getting dark. Carry flashlights or put reflective tape or stickers on candy bags. Carry extra clothing layers as temperatures will dip when the sun sets.
  • Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. Check candy before eating any to ensure none of it is spoiled or has been tampered with.

Halloween is a special, memorable night for children. Taking some easy precautions before heading out the door, and while on the trick-or-treat trail, ensure the memories will be happy, and everyone will get home safely to begin the candy trading.
