Reasons to Breathe Through Your Nose

(Newswire.net — December 18, 2017) Cheyenne, Wyoming — Other than being a physiological necessity, breathing also helps regulate your mood and influences overall health. Have you ever noticed that when you’re angry, your breath gets all heavy and races almost out of control? Or when you’re romantically swooned, your breathing becomes shallow and extended a bit? Well, emotions stimulate those physical indicators which is expressed through your breathing.

Hyperventilating and sighing are typically stress related responses, believe it or not. Deliberately breathing through your nose, gently yet quickly, guide your body and mind bag on a path of equilibrium. Slowing your breathing to a steady zephyr is a simple and effective way to de-stress.

One should take care to note that breathing through your mouth cannot offer such relief. Maurice Cottle, founder of the American Rhinologic Society, explains that the nose serves a minimum of 30 purposes in support of the lungs, heart and brain, among other organs. The mouth, built for the specific task of talking, chewing and the starting point for digestion, is more of a backup oxygen intake system.

“Part of the benefits of nose breathing is related to the fact that there is nitric oxide in your nose, and when you breathe gently and slowly through your nose, you carry a small amount of this beneficial gas into your lungs,” explains Joseph Mercola, a well-recognized medical professional. “Nitric oxide not only helps maintain homeostasis, or balance, within your body, it also helps to open your airways (bronchodilation), blood vessels (vasodilation), and has antibacterial properties that help neutralize germs and bacteria.”

Now that’s a pretty tall order our nose fills in comparison to what its diminutive size seemingly belies. If that weren’t enough, breathing through the nose also aids in standardizing the amount of air in-take, this is vital as persistent overbreathing can overhelm the lungs with improper balance of gases received and expelled.

“A cardiologist at The University of Pavia, Italy, compared a group of mountaineers who practiced slow breathing an hour a day for two years before attempting to climb Mount Everest to a group who didn’t,” told Yoga Journal. “The breathing group reached the summit without needing the supplemental oxygen the other group did, and their blood and exhalation samples showed they were using 70 percent of the surface area of their lungs, an amount that maximizes the O2 taken in.”

When properly breathing via the nostrils, your lungs and by extension your overall performance, improves significantly. A great way to get started with better nose breathing is to employ the aid of a nasal strip, much like the Breath-IN™ nasal strips by HeathlyWiser™ which guarantees comfort, function and relief.
