( — December 15, 2017) Orlando, FL — Fish oil supplements are some of the most popular natural alternatives utilized today. They are thought to offer a myriad of health benefits, especially to those who want to improve their cardiovascular health. Women who just gave birth may also benefit from the use of this natural alternative.

New mothers may benefit from the use of fish oil supplements. Pregnancy can be a life-changing, delicate and rewarding process. However, it can also be a complicated and challenging stage in a woman’s life.

While pregnancy can be tough, the challenges that new mothers go through don’t end after labor. New mothers are often susceptible to mood disorders and postpartum depression. This serious illness may cause moderate to severe depression symptoms.

Women who suffer from postpartum depression often experience confusion, sadness, mood swings, sleeping and eating disturbances, hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts. A few weeks after delivery, many new mothers are also prone to experiencing symptoms of “baby blues”. These symptoms may include mood swings, insomnia and an overwhelming feeling, which are all temporary.

Consumption of omega-3s has long been recommended by experts. These fats are thought to aid in the neurological development as well as the growth of a fetus. Many pregnant women even take prenatal vitamins with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is a type of omega-3 fat.

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats are thought to play a vital role in the proper functioning of the brain and body. They may be obtained from eating fish such as tuna and sardines or through supplementation.

In a small study featured in the Experimental Biology 2011 meeting in Washington, DC, it was found that omega-3 consumption during pregnancy may potentially reduce the risk of experiencing symptoms linked with postpartum depression.

In a recent study, 52 pregnant women were divided into two groups. The first group took fish oil and the other a placebo pill. The fish oil capsule, which contains 300 milligrams of DHA, was administered during the 24th to 40th weeks of pregnancy.

It was found that the participants who took fish oil experienced significantly fewer symptoms of postpartum depression than the placebo group. The fish oil group also reported lesser anxiety symptoms.

Michelle Price Judge, PhD, RD, a faculty member at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing, revealed that intake of regulated amounts of DHA during the period of pregnancy may potentially decrease the postpartum depression symptoms.

Consumption of fish is often highly recommended, but there are also fish oil supplements available. Supplements are thought to contain higher amounts of omega-3s and may have little to no environmental pollutants such as mercury.
