(Newswire.net — December 30, 2017) Cheyenne, Wyoming — The skin is the largest organ of the human body, the first line of defense from germs, infections and the elements all around so needless to say that skin care is pivotal to overall health. There are a number of things that can irritate the skin, from soaps and scented lotions to dry weather and hard water. Yes, hard water can irritate the skin and lead to eczema.
“By damaging the skin barrier, washing with hard water may contribute to the development of eczema – a chronic skin condition characterized by an intensely itchy red rash,” said Dr Simon Danby, lead study author from the University of Sheffield. But what exactly is hard water? Calcium and magnesium rich water is considered to be hard as it’s not as easy to use when compared with soft (mineral free) water.
It might seem insignificant at first glance but considering that new born babies are being bathed unwittingly with hard water, it is a serious concern. “Babies often start to get eczema from two months. The symptoms are patches of red, dry and itchy skin on the face or behind the ears, and in the creases of the neck, knees and elbows,” describes the National Health Service in England.
While there have been other studies done in the UK, Spain and Japan which show the correlation between water hardness and the increased risk of eczema among school aged kids, this King’s College London study recently published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology is the first of its kind examining the propensity of eczema caused by hard water among infants as it recruited 1,300 three month old infants across the UK for the research.
“Eczema affects about 10% to 20% of infants and about 3% of adults and children in the U.S. Most infants who develop the condition outgrow it by their tenth birthday, while some people continue to have symptoms on and off throughout life,” says WebMD.com. “If your baby has atopic eczema, anti-scratch mittens may stop them scratching their skin. Keep your skin covered with light clothing to reduce damage from habitual scratching.”
Being properly informed of the type of water getting in contact with your skin and such of your baby is critical to circumventing eczema and other skin issues. The HealthyWiser™ AquaTest™ 7 Way Water Analysis Test Kit is a safe way of knowing exactly what is in your water supply as it detects total hardness, total alkalinity, free chlorine, bromine, pH, total chlorine and cyanuric acid.
