(Newswire.net — January 1, 2018) Woodbridge, VA — 2018 is storming in with an extremely frigid cold snap. Many areas across the U.S. are experiencing record low temperatures this weekend, with icy roads and downed power lines already affecting the New Year holiday.

If you’re in an area experiencing icy conditions, officials from the Texas Department of Transportation recommend only driving if necessary. Each year, AAA reports it rides to the rescue of approximately 32 million stranded motorists across the country. If you must drive, they advise you to reduce speed, allow extra time to reach your destination, and increase the following distance between yourself and other cars. If you start to slide on the ice, ease off the gas or brake pedal and steer into the direction of the skid; it is vital to not slam on your brakes because this could make the car hydroplane.

Other tips include:

  • Stay at least 200 feet behind vehicles treating roadways.
  • If stranded, call 911 to alert emergency services, and remain in your car.
  • Assemble an emergency roadside kit, including a first aid kit, booster cables, emergency blankets, sand or cat litter, flashlight, ice scraper, small shovel, warm clothes, snacks and water.
  • AAA also recommends checking tire pressure since tires need more air when it is cold.

The Kansas emergency management division advised that people going out in the cold should wear multiple thin layers instead of a few thick ones to stay better insulated, work outside only for short periods with a partner, and bring in outdoor pets.

To ready yourself and home for the subzero temperatures, follow these tips from CPS Energy:

  • Charge cell phones, tablets and laptops.
  • Do not connect portable generators to your home’s electrical wiring
  • Charge cell phones, tablets and laptops.
  • Keep children and pets away from generators at all times
  • Do not use a gas or electric oven or stove top for heating
  • Gather essential supplies needed during a power outage, including flashlight, batteries, bottled water, medication, and a first aid kit
  • Report unsafe situations involving electricity or natural gas immediately by calling 911.
