Kelly Huang on Nevada Traffic Safety Initiatives

(Newswire.net — February 1, 2018) Las Vegas, NV — Long considered one of the most dangerous states to operate a motor vehicle in as the state of Nevada has rolled out numerous traffic safety initiatives over the past year. Previously rated as a “red light” state in the Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws by consumer safety group Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, Nevada earned a “yellow light” ranking for 2017 with room for continued improvement in road safety standards. Kelly K. Huang, a prominent personal injury attorney in the Las Vegas area of the state, knows that the state’s roads have long been associated with dangerous conditions and behaviors. “Nevada has lagged behind other states in implementing traffic safety standards to reduce crash fatalities,” says Mr. Huang. “It is reassuring to see the state take positive steps in reducing dangerous conditions and improving public safety.” To learn more about Mr. Huang and his law firm, visit https://www.lawyers.com/las-vegas/nevada/kelly-k-huang-390981-a/.

While Nevada has earned a “yellow light” ranking in years past, study parameters were adjusted, causing the ranking to dip into the red in 2016. Researchers at the Vulnerable Road Users Project at the University of Nevada Las Vegas indicated that the state’s progress toward better safety ratings made a substantial difference in 2017. One of the initiatives that had a positive impact was the passage of ignition interlock legislation, which will go into effect on October 1, 2018. The new law requires anyone arrested with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above in the state to use an interlock device for 90 days after the arrest. If convicted, those arrested may be ordered to extend the usage of ignition interlock systems for six months or more. This new regulation was aimed at reducing drunk driving fatalities in the state, which are just below national averages and accounted for over 1000 deaths over a ten-year period.

Laws focused on teenager driver safety were also enacted. Under new regulations, young people become eligible for a driver’s license only after completing 50 hours of supervised driving practice and hold a learner’s permit for a minimum of six months prior to issuance of the formal license. This has had the effect of reducing accidents caused by inexperienced drivers, and the initiative has gotten high marks by consumer safety groups. Distracted driver regulations, particularly those that focus on banning the use of mobile communication devices for texting while driving, have also improved the state’s status in traffic safety. Kelly Huang, Esq. believes that more work needs to be done to make the state’s roads safer for all travelers. “With tourism and miles driven at all-time highs in Nevada, it is time for the state to continue safety improvements,” says Mr. Huang. “All state residents and visitors benefit from safer roads.” For more information on Mr. Huang’s work in the personal injury law field, visit https://www.bbb.org/southern-nevada/business-reviews/attorneys/huang-and-associates-in-las-vegas-nv-90012931
