The Truth About Keto Diets

(Newswire.net — March 19, 2018) Cheyenne, Wyoming — Low carb/high protein diets are just one of the many diet plans available these days but the Atkins diet, based on the process of ketosis, is certainly one of the most recognized of its kind. While keto diets are relatively common now, ketosis, the actual machinery behind its efficiency is a blur for many would be dieters.

“Dietary ketosis is among the most misunderstood concepts in nutrition because it is often confused with ketoacidosis, which is a life-threatening condition most often associated with uncontrolled insulin-deficient Type 1 diabetes,” states Lindora Clinic. “In the Type 1 diabetic, the absence of insulin leads to a toxic build-up of blood glucose and an extreme break-down of fat and muscle tissue. This condition doesn’t occur in individuals who have even a small amount of insulin, whether from natural production or from it being artificially administered.”

Clearly, diabetics aren’t supposed to even consider the keto diet since it counters their dietary needs and overall health. For others who are given a clean bill of health by their doctors, this is an interesting diet plan to compliment any workout routine. However, it’s important to note that just as exercise can lead to sore muscles and some amount of discomfort at times, the initial onset of ketosis, the process responsible for the efficiency of the keto diet, comes with some spin of effects.

“The keto flu is caused by the transition when your body starts burning fat for energy instead of sugar,” explains DietDoctor.com. “Most of the symptoms are caused by a lack of water and salt, caused by a temporarily increased urine production as the body enters ketosis (the increased fat-burning mode). This can be compensated for, effectively curing the keto flu. Any problems can be minimized, and sometimes entirely cured, by getting enough water and salt into your system.”

While this might sound a little off-putting, it’s actually not as intense as one would think, especially when proactive steps are taken to stay hydrated as advised. Moreover, ketosis is a safe way to lose fat without the risk of losing muscles as well, since ketones play well with the other compounds found in muscle tissues.

“We know that the main source of fuel during a ketogenic diet comes from fat and ketones as the liver produces ketone bodies in the absence of excess glucose (during fasting, starvation, or ketogenic dieting),” notes Cameron Ackerson, Exercise and Nutrition Scientist. “They then flow to extra-hepatic tissues, such as the brain and skeletal muscle, to be used as fuel in place of glucose. Ketones themselves contain a protein-sparing property, preventing the breakdown of lean muscle tissue when we become keto-adapted.”

During ketosis, muscles are preserved while fat is melted away. There are also exogenous ketones available on the market to deliver the very same fat burning effects without necessarily requiring one to stick to a ketogenic diet.
