Becoming an Egg Donor Is Rewarding in Many Ways

(Newswire.net — March 14, 2018) Barcelona , — Unfortunately, there are many couples who are unable to conceive and have children on their own. Studies show that about a third of infertility cases are due to female infertility, another third to male sterility, and the rest are due to issues affecting both partners, from which many cases simply remain an unresolved mystery. Everyday Health reports that infertility affects about 10 percent of women, with possible issues resulting from ovulatory disfunction, poorly functioning fallopian tubes and uterus abnormalities.

Yet, there are countless reasons that have to do with age such as premature menopause, environmental exposure to medical treatments such as radiation and chemoterapy but also behavioural factors regarding one’s lifestlyle that can greatly influence a couple’s ability to conceive.

Fortunately, due to modern science and medical advances, there are ways for couples who are challenged in this area to become pregnant such as via IVF. Egg donation is a generous act in which a female donor helps another woman to fulfil her dream and become a mother. Every woman is born with a certain number of eggs in her ovaries, of which only 0,1% are used during her fertile life cycle. Egg donation is about using those unused eggs which would otherwise be normally lost during the regular cycle.

Every woman aged between 18 and 35 years who is in excellent physical and mental health can be a donor, after a detailed study has been conducted to assess both her physical and psychological health, including a gynecological exam and blood tests to confirm she is suitable for donating. The good news is that the treatment can be completed within 12-15 days, after which the menstruation takes place as normal during the regular cycle since this process does not affect the donor’s fertility in any way.
Unlike other countries in the world, egg donation in Spain is anonymous to protect both sides. Yet parents to be are allowed to learn about the physical appearance of the donor as well as her psychological traits such as the reason for donating. For most donors, the selfless act of being able to help couples in making their dream to become parents come true is a sufficient reward, yet since this process involves a few discomforts and inconveniences such as taking a sick day for the day of retrieval, administering the medication to stimulate the ovaries and going in for control ultrasound visits, it even involves a financial compensation which is regulated by the Bioethical Committee of the Catalan Government. The only precaution is to abstain from sexual intercourse until your period starts to avoid the risk of complications such as an unwanted pregnancy.

The final step of the process, ovarian puncture, is performed under sedation to avoid any sort of discomfort. The donor is free to go home after 2 hours but should rest on that day and lead a calmer life the following week. When the period arrives, a check-up will be scheduled to ensure that everything is back to normal. According to Spanish law, an egg donor can donate until a total of six babies are born.

Interestingly, one of every three cycles of egg donation in Europe is done in Barcelona, making it the European Capital of egg donation.
