Go Nuts to Stay pH Healthy

(Newswire.net — March 28, 2018) Cheyenne, Wyoming — If nothing else is remembered from the hugely successful animation franchise Ice Age, it is that Scrat, a saber-toothed squirrel, really loves his nuts, and for good reason. Nuts are an excellent source of protein and a myriad of essential nutrients, moreover, some nuts are more alkaline forming than others once consumed, which aids with sustaining the body’s ideal slightly alkaline pH levels.

“Some foods have an acidifying effect (usually those containing sugars, trans fats, dairy, preservatives, sweeteners, chemicals etc), whereas others have an alkaline effect,” notes Avocado Ninja, an alkalinity advocate entity based in the United Kingdom. “Conveniently for us, it just so happens that the foods that contain alkaline minerals (and leave an alkaline effect) are all the foods we already know are good for us: low sugar foods, fresh alkaline vegetables, nuts, seeds, salads, sea vegetables, water rich foods etc. And for the foods that contain minerals that have an acidic effect: sweets, alcohol, trans fats, meats, dairy, pizza, cola, biscuits, chips, white breads and pastas, refined foods, processed foods etc.”

One of the most common and nutritionally acclaimed members of the nut world is almond. Almonds are packed with minerals and nutrients such as potassium, iron, zinc and vitamin E, it even holds the honor of providing the most calcium compared to all other nuts. It’s considered to be a moderate alkaline forming nut but the top spot actually goes to another nut, a more festive favorite, the beloved chestnut.

“Chestnuts rank as the most alkaline-forming nut,” states LivingStrong.com. “Their alkalizing effect on the body is due in part to their high water content — chestnuts are about 52 percent water. Their high moisture content also makes them the only low-fat, low-calorie nuts. Chestnuts are also the only nuts that contain vitamin C, a vital antioxidant nutrient. Chestnuts are also an excellent source of manganese and copper, and a good source of magnesium, folic acid and vitamins B-1, B-2 and B-6.”

Given all that power, there should be a campaign to rename chestnuts to “wonder-nuts” as there’s seemingly no end to its wondrous benefits. Eating nuts of all types on a regular basis is highly recommended as they all, at differing extents, contribute to overall health. Nuts are known to support bone and teeth strength, lower density of bad lipid cholesterol and improve concentration.

“Research shows that diets consisting of highly alkaline foods — fresh vegetables, fruits and unprocessed plant-based sources of protein, for example — result in a more alkaline urine pH level, which helps protect healthy cells and balance essential mineral levels,” details Dr. Axe. “Alkaline diets (also known as the alkaline ash diets) have been shown to help prevent plaque formation in blood vessels, stop calcium from accumulating in urine, prevent kidney stones, build stronger bones, reduce muscle wasting or spasms, and much more.”
