Depleted Magnesium Levels Can Affect Energy Metabolism

(Newswire.net — May 16, 2018) Orlando, FL — While magnesium is essential for human health and survival, not many people truly understand its importance. This amazingly therapeutic mineral has been found to be important in a variety of enzymatic reactions and processes inside the body. As a matter of fact, it is a popular subject of many research studies and clinical trials.

In a study, it was found that depleted magnesium levels can have undesirable effects on energy metabolism. Magnesium actually plays many important roles in the body. Many of its functions influence the strength and health of the bones as well as the condition and performance of the heart and nervous system.

This study was conducted by ARS physiologist Henry C. Lukaski and nutritionist Forrest H. Nielsen. Lukaski is assistant director of ARS’s Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The two researchers together with the center’s clinical nutrition support staff revealed that inadequate levels of magnesium are linked with the increased need of oxygen during a workout or exercise. In this study, it was found that reduced levels of magnesium during a moderate activity are likely to utilize more energy.

This only means that the body is more susceptible to exhaustion when there are low levels of the mineral. In the first phase of the study, 10 postmenopausal women were in a controlled diet and adequate intake of magnesium for 35 days.

In the next phase, they were subjected to a low-magnesium diet, which was less than half the recommended daily intake of the mineral for 93 days. During the last phase, they received a diet with adequate levels of magnesium for 49 days.

It is further worth mentioning that the volunteers were also subjected to exercise tests at the end of every dietary phase. There were also biochemical and physiological tests.

After undergoing a low-magnesium diet, the researchers noticed a significant overall loss of magnesium. The participants also had reduced magnesium levels in their muscles. Further, they found that the red blood cells were below the normal range.

The researchers found that when the body is low in magnesium, more energy and oxygen were required for the performance of low-level activities than when there were adequate magnesium levels.

The study was published in the May 2002 issue of the Journal of Nutrition.
