(Newswire.net — May 23, 2018) Orlando, FL — Today, more and more people are turning to certain medications just to manage diabetes. However, there is also a growing amount of research on the use of certain vitamins to help sufferers of the condition.
Scientists reveal that the B vitamin called niacin may be helpful in diabetes treatment. This water soluble vitamin can be found in many food, but there are also supplements available.
It is important to understand that diabetes is a widely prevalent condition. What makes it even more alarming is that it has no cure yet, and can only be managed. It is also known for its complications, such as foot amputation.
The researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center conducted a trial. The findings of the study was published in the Archives of International Medicine.
In this trial, there were 148 participants that received niacin. It was found that they achieved significant improvements in the lipid levels. Even low doses of this B vitamin have been found to offer favorable effects not just on blood lipids, but also lipoproteins.
“Previous reports have shown that niacin in high doses raises blood glucose, but this trial shows that in doses of 1,000 milligrams per day and 1,500 mg/d, niacin therapy was well-tolerated and changes in glycemic control were minimal,”said Dr Scott Grundy, the lead author of the study.
The investigators in the study focused on the use of niacin for the condition called dyslipidemia, which was suffered by diabetes patients.
According to researchers, this condition is characterized by the high levels not just of triglycerides, but also other lipid-related abnormalities. These abnormalities were also accompanied with depressed levels of the good high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
This study demonstrated how useful this B vitamin is against diabetes when used in low doses. It is worth mentioning that sufferers of diabetic dyslipidemia are often treated with drugs formulated to lower triglyceride.
The investigators realized that niacin is far better than the medication in raising HDL levels. It also decreased triglycerides in Type 2 diabetes sufferers.
More studies are still underway to explore more of niacin’s healing goodness against diabetes. This B vitamin is widely studied by researchers and clinicians due to its therapeutic potentials.
