(Newswire.net — June 19, 2018) Orlando, FL — Adequate sleep has long been considered to be one of the keys to good health. However, a research has shown that too much of it can potentially lead to undesirable health consequences.

Researchers conducted a study that analyzed information from over 3,000 older women in the United States. The subjects wore a fitness tracker-like-device that measures activity and sleep for one week.

In this study, there were subjects who were 78 years old on average. It is worth mentioning that the investigators also calculated every participant’s “Reynolds Risk Score.”

This is the score that estimates one’s risk of having cardiovascular disease or a complication, like stroke or heart attack.

The findings have revealed that women who slept over 9 hours a night had the estimated likelihood of cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years of 13 percent. This was compared to the 12 percent obtained by those who slept 7.5 to 8 hours.

Certain factors were considered to play a role, such as smoking habits, body mass index (BMI), age and self-rated health.

The study lead author was Kelsie Full, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California San Diego.

The findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions.

Several earlier studies have actually found the link between getting too much or too little sleep and the risk of cardiovascular ailment. Sleep medication is also considered to be a contributing factor.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night for adults aged 65 years and above.

Experts have long been reminding the public to take the measures necessary in taking better care of heart health. It can be done through following a healthy diet and lifestyle. It is similarly important to consider the use of certain natural remedies believed to be helpful for heart health.
