Scientists Now Suggest Environmental Factors May Trigger Lupus Onset

(Newswire.net — July 5, 2018) Orlando, FL — Studies about medical conditions like lupus continue to grow in number. While the development of this condition has long been thought to have something to do with genetics, it is worth realizing that it may also have some external influences.

Gaurav Gulati, MD, a physician-researcher at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, says that lupus has environmental triggers, which includes not just particulates in air pollution, but also ultraviolet light.

This condition called lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease. It has the ability to attack organs inside the body.

According to Gulati, the difficult part about this condition is that the treatment options remain limited. Further, the understanding of the condition, particularly in terms of its onset and progression, is undeniably limited.

Gulati is an assistant professor in the UC Division of Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology and a UC Health physician.

In the United States, this condition affects 1.5 million in the United States. While it occurs in both genders, the researchers found that 90 percent of the ones diagnosed are women.

The Lupus Foundation of America also reveals that the disease disproportionately impacts African-Americans.

This condition can cause swelling, inflammation, and even damage to the skin, joints, kidneys, blood, lungs, and heart. When it gets severe, it becomes fatal.

The findings of the study were published online in the Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism scholarly journal.

The scientists found that while it is true there is a genetic predisposition for the disease, it is not the only cause. They discovered that ultraviolet radiation from sunlight produces toxic effects on the skin.

When it does, it triggers flare-ups in Lupus symptoms. Air pollution, specifically from diesel vehicular exhaust, can also worsen the condition.

It is worth mentioning that certain nutritional deficiencies have been found to contribute to lupus development. This includes deficiency in vitamin B12, which is a highly therapeutic nutrient.

In a study published in Rheumatology International, vitamin B12 deficiencies were linked with systemic lupus erythematosus.

B vitamins have many roles to play inside the body, and vitamin B12 is one of member of the B Complex family. Researchers found this nutrient takes care of keeping the blood cells and nerves healthy.

Further, this B vitamin also helps in DNA construction and genetic material. It is always wise to ensure that the body is not suffering from a deficiency of this vitamin.

Purest Vantage B Vitamin Complex may be an excellent source of this nutrient. This highly potent and pure formula could be a useful source of B vitamins.

It contains Choline, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Pantothenic acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6.
