(Newswire.net — July 7, 2018) Orlando, FL — Today, there are many people who suffer from arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This condition causes pain, which prevents many sufferers from functioning efficiently, working, and living a normal life. However, it seems that there are even more undesirable consequences of having this condition.

Canadian research reveals that individuals with RA are believed to be more susceptible to diabetes by 50%. Rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes are two very different conditions, but each of them causes some negative life-changing effects to sufferers.

Diabetes is highly prevalent especially in countries such as the United States. There are factors believed to contribute to the development of the condition and it includes excess weight or obesity. Having the condition can be a struggle, since sufferers need to manage it well to reduce their risk of complications. Having both rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes could place sufferers in a difficult situation.

In a study published by the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, it was found that sufferers of psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune forms of arthritis, are more likely to develop diabetes by 50%.

The database of British Columbia was reviewed by a team of researchers. They focused on the medical records of sufferers from 1996 to 2006. The people involved in the database were thousands of individuals with psoriatic arthritis and RA, as well as those without rheumatic conditions. It was found that individuals with rheumatic disease experienced an increased risk of diabetes by 50%.

Daniel Solomon, MD, the study author from the Division of Rheumatology, Brigham Women’s Hospital, reveals that there are factors that contribute to the increase in diabetes risk. Some of these factors are age and body mass index (BMI).

Dr. Solomon suggests that at-risk individuals should do their very best to lose extra pounds and keep their weight healthy. He also added that inflammation in RA may be associated with insulin resistance.

Engaging in regular exercise is essential to achieve weight loss goals. There are arthritis sufferers who take advantage of pain medications to improve their mobility and be able to engage in physical activities. Unfortunately, these pharmaceutical drugs may also be associated with side effects.

There are also those who use natural alternatives, which are widely believed to be safer than pain medications. One of the most popular natural alternatives for arthritis are omega-3 fish oil supplements.

Omega-3 fats are essential for brain and body functions. They are also thought to be powerful anti-inflammatories, which may be essential in fighting arthritis pain and inflammation.
