(Newswire.net — July 11, 2018) Winnetka, IL — Children’s poor sleep and breathing habits may cause neurological, behavioral and social problems at home and school and is the #1 topic of importance in the pediatric healthcare profession. Dentists, often referred to as oral physicians, are awaiting a final version of the new ADA guidelines soon to define the role of dentistry with a new standard of care.  Among leading providers, Dr. Anthony Marino, an orthodontist, offers two pediatric sleep and airway lectures in Northern CA on August 15 and 17.

Anit Patel, MD, pulmonologist/sleep medicine specialist, will discuss the AMA position on pediatric Sleep-related Breathing Disorders, (SRBD), sleep apnea, medical literature review and current available medical treatment modalities.  Anthony Marino, DDS, MS, will share his 30 years of experience using FDA-cleared intraoral appliances specifically designed to address the symptoms of SRBD and deliver ideal facial balance, neuromuscular tone for proper tongue and swallow pattern, including ideal orthopedic and orthodontic results with no braces.

SRBD presents a challenge.  Dr. Marino presents the HealthyStart® solution to a multidisciplinary medical and dental audience.  Lectures will be internationally live streamed from the Henry Schein showrooms near San Francisco in Dublin and Rocklin, CA.

World changer in dentistry, Dr. Earl O. Bergersen, DDS, MSD, ABO, said of his epic professional experience that “There have been only 3 break-throughs in dentistry of massive significance”:  first was fluoride and then dental implants. Now beyond anything to date, is the understanding of and treatment for SRBD. It has been a lifestyle evolution that has taken children to an unhealthy habit of mouth breathing, with the use of nipple bottles, pacifiers and soft processed foods. As thumb sucking physically changes the child’s oral cavity, SRBD and mouth breathing has altered the growth and development, airway and sleep of millions of children with little notice. How did this go unnoticed? What is common is often missed or dismissed.

The ADA, American Dental Association, has placed massive attention on this epidemic affecting 9 out of 10 children with one or more symptoms tied largely to their oral habits. With decades of research and data the evidence tracks the consequences of these traits if left untreated into an adulthood of misery and ineffective Band-Aids that are costly and marginal at best.

VIDEO.  Once you know this, you can’t unknow it!

Awareness is needed for parents, educators and the medical and dental communities.

The Chicago based ADA, American Dental Association, has stepped up to collectively redefine the Role of Dentistry in late August. American dentists will likely take on a much more significant role in the evaluation of pediatric growth and development. The additional responsibility to become highly competent and deeply familiar with this area of sleep and airway will be met in the continued education for screening and treatment. If not attained, the dentist will see parents seeking referrals for certified providers. Digital online CE course work and live classroom lectures are expected to fill up quickly with this new statement.

Training to certify and treat.

Dr. Anthony Marino, DDS, MS, and Dr. Anit Patel, MD, pulminologst, invite all disciplines of the pediatric healthcare profession to come to this introduction of SRBD and learn the fundamentals and treatment of this condition, utilizing a system that has successfully treated over 4 million children around the world with an FDA cleared appliance, over 500 patents and decades of use.

An estimated 40 million children in the U.S. have at least one outward symptom and on average about 6 symptoms related to SRBD. There is a clear forecast for all pediatric caregivers: be trained and prepared to treat or refer patients with sleep and breathing disorders to a certified practice.

“Multidisciplinary care is required.” There is a growing consensus among doctors engaged in study clubs and associations to establish trusted multidisciplinary referral networks. Now dentists, orthodontists, ENT’s, pediatricians, family doctors, Ph.D.’s, educators, myofunctional therapists, general family and childcare providers are connecting parents to the most comprehensive and permanent care for these young patients and wasting no time. Time is the enemy– These corrections need to be made in a child’s brief growth and development phase from about age 2 to near adolescence.

“This is a medical problem with a dental solution, Marino said of the silent epidemic. Children will not outgrow these problems–they are growing into them.” He knows because he has been treating thousands of children with SRBD for 3 decades.

Mapping the airway with 3D imaging. The innovative 3D, CBCT Cone Beam computed tomography is a medical imaging technique with ultra low dose radiation to provide a clear view of the airway and will be reviewed in the course.

For pediatricians, dentists, sleep specialists, PhDs and educators, the message is one of awareness and action taken. For years, dentists have been concerned about what they witness in their practices. Now the entire world is anxious to know what their dentist can do to help children avoid the outcome of the unaddressed root causes and outward symptoms of this very treatable and progressive health condition known as SRBD.
