(Newswire.net — July 31, 2018) Orlando, FL — For decades, researchers have been conducting studies to learn about eye health and protection. Scientists recently found that some measures are helpful in improving vision.

According to the National Eye Institute, the prevalence of eye diseases will double from 2010 to 2050.

This includes common eye diseases like cataracts, eye-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic neuropathy.

Researchers strongly suggest consumption of vision-healthy foods. This means eating lots of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, kale, and collard greens. These foods contain antioxidants that aid in the prevention of cataracts.

It has further been suggested to consume grapes, which may also offer support to healthy eyes. Scientists discovered that grape-rich diets could protect the retina from the damaging effects of oxidative stress.

Experts also suggest keeping weight under control. It is important to remember that obesity or even being overweight can increase the risk of conditions like diabetes or other systemic disorders. These conditions may potentially result in vision loss.

Scientists from the University of Melbourne in Australia and Leeds Beckett University in the United Kingdom even found that considerable weight loss may reverse eye damage that is caused by hypertension, obesity and diabetes.

The Vision Council in 2016 also reported that in the United States, three quarters of the population were concerned about issues affecting the eyes caused by UV rays.

Experts strongly recommend wearing sunglasses for eye protection against the dangers of UV rays. It has also been recommended to regularly allow the eyes to rest.

The National Eye Institute recommends the implementation of a 20-20-20 rule. This means looking at something else that is located about 20 feet away for every 20 minutes that one is looking at a screen. Staring should also last for 20 seconds.

It is always wise to take better care of the eyes, and it may be made through nourishing the body with certain vitamins. This includes vitamin B12 and folic acid, which have been known to offer many health benefits.

In a Blue Mountains Eye Study, the researchers had 1,390 subjects in a span of 15 years. They measured levels of vitamin B12, folate, and homocysteine.

The findings of this study were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

This protein called homocysteine is produced inside the body. The thing is that it needs sufficient levels of B12 and folic acid to be metabolized. It is worth mentioning that increased levels of homocysteine may mean vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency.

It was found that those with elevated homocysteine levels had a greater risk of macular degeneration by 56 percent. It is important to understand that macular degeneration is the top cause of blindness in the United States.
