Study Shows Oral Bacteria Trigger Digestion Problems

(Newswire.net — August 29, 2018) Orlando, FL — Today, more and more researchers and clinicians study digestive health issues and how they can be prevented or treated. In a research, it has been found that some of these problems may be due to what is inside the mouth.

According to MedicalXpress, a team of scientists were able to realize their patients suffering from bowel disorders had many oral bacteria in their poop. These disorders range from irritable bowel syndrome, to ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease.

Due to this finding, the researchers conducted a lab study to test their theory.

The investigators tried to manipulate mice to a certain extent in which they did not have any stomach bacteria. This provides a clean slate for testing their hypothesis. They also injected saliva obtained from people with Crohn’s disease into the guts of the animals.

They discovered bacteria from the saliva triggered some cells to produce inflammation. The test in mice with normal guts was repeated. They also found that they were not impacted by the bacteria.

In the third test, they found bacteria following the antibiotic treatment, and it did not result in inflammation. The research team also tested their theory with colitis.

LiveScience even reported that in mice bred prone to the condition, the oral bacteria were able to trigger an inflammatory response.

The study authors revealed that individuals with bowel disease struggle from intestinal inflammation, which created a conducive home for oral bacteria. This also has been found to worsen inflammation and gut problems.

The investigators believe further studies on oral bacteria could encourage the development of new medications. These new treatments may provide a huge relief for those who suffer from bowel disorders.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states they are actually a huge strain for the health care industry. There is an estimated 10 to 15 percent of the population affected by these disorders.

The Centers for Disease Control also writes that Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis produce a lot of medical costs. It is worth mentioning that they still have no cure yet. In 2008, the medical costs reached $6.8 billion.

It is always necessary to take the measures necessary that can aid in protecting and improving digestive health. More studies are still underway to see the link between oral bacteria and some digestive health issues.

Today, there are many experts who recommend ensuring the levels of digestive enzymes are adequate inside the body. Digestive enzymes break down food and ensure nutrients are properly absorbed inside the body.
