Why Osteoarthritis Is Prevalent in Women

(Newswire.net — September 24, 2018) Orlando, FL — While it has not been determined yet what causes osteoarthritis, it has been discovered that it is more common in women. There are factors believed to contribute to the development of this condition, and why it affects females more.

Experts found clues as to why osteoarthritis is more prevalent in women. According to researchers, males and females are different, especially in terms of the fluid that aids in protecting the cartilage in their knee joints.

These researchers are Dr. Monte Hunter and Dr. Sadanand Fulzele. The former is the chair of the MCG Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and a coauthor of the study in the journal Scientific Reports, and the latter is a bone biologist in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.

These investigators found that there are clear differences in the synovial fluid of the joint. These are in terms of the messages sent and received by cells via the tiny pieces of RNA, which are called microRNA. These differences were found in the females and males with osteoarthritis, which is a prevalent and debilitating condition.

According to the researchers, these differences may actually help explain the reason why the condition is more common in women. It could lead to a more targeted way in diagnosing and treating this wear and tear type of arthritis.

It is worth mentioning that osteoarthritis affects over 30 million individuals in the United States alone. It is characterized by deterioration in the joint cartilage, which provides padding between the bones.

Dr. Monet Hunter says this is a huge problem. He is chair of the MCG Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and a coauthor of the study in the journal Scientific Reports.

Today, the treatment of the condition normally targets symptoms like pain and inflammation. Clinicians aim to provide individuals with arthritis additional options for the diagnosis and treatment of this often age-related condition.

Women seemed to be more affected by the condition. In total, women had over 70 altered biological processes rather than males, who only had nearly 50.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the risk factors of osteoarthritis are obesity, increasing age, overuse, injury, genetic predisposition, and of course being female.

The good news is that osteoarthritis sufferers don’t have to suffer in silence due to the symptoms caused by this condition. There are remedies like glucosamine, which is an all-natural joint health enhancing ingredient.

VitaBreeze Glucosamine formula could be extremely useful for individuals with arthritis. It doesn’t just have glucosamine, but also other ingredients like methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), chondroitin, and turmeric. It even comes with a complete customer satisfaction guarantee.
