(Newswire.net — October 23, 2018) Orlando, FL — Engaging in physical activities has long been known to be extremely beneficial for health. However, there are certain levels of activity that are found to be detrimental to health rather than beneficial.
According to scientists, competitive male triathletes are found to be at a higher risk of myocardial fibrosis.
Experts have long warned against this potentially harmful heart condition. It is worth mentioning that the increased risk of myocardial fibrosis is not evident in female triathletes.
This new study, however, has revealed it was directly linked with the amount of exercise of athletes.
The research was presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
JitkaStarekova, M.D., study lead author, said the clinical relevance of these scars is currently unclear.
Starekova is a fellow in the Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany.
However, she added that they might be a foundation for future heart failure and arrhythmia.
It is worth mentioning that myocardial fibrosis is characterized by the scarring of the heart. It normally affects the ventricles, which are the pumping chambers. Experts warn that this condition might advance to heart failure.
Engaging in regular exercise is highly recommended, as it has positive effects on the cardiovascular system. However, it appears to be totally different when it comes to elite athletes.
This interesting study involved a group of athletes, which includes 55 men with an average age of 44. There were also 30 women with an average age of 43.
Scientists believe that higher exercise-induced systolic blood pressure may lead to a greater myocardial mass. More exercise might subject athletes to an increased risk of myocarditis, which is an inflammation of the heart muscle.
They further suggest that these factors, combined with repeatedly increased stress of the left ventricular wall from exercise, can cause an injury to the heart muscle.
More studies are still underway to validate these findings. However, men are strongly advised to resort to measures helpful in protecting their heart health.
This may be done by nourishing the body with nutrients that are being widely studied due to their heart health benefits. Fruits and vegetables are the most recommended foods, as they often contain heart-health-protecting nutrients.
