Doctors Now Suggest Depression Screening for Teenagers

(Newswire.net — November 13, 2018) Orlando, FL — Depression is a silent killer and is something that needs to be addressed properly.  It can pretty much affect everyone, including those in their teenage years.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, annual checkups are recommended from the age 12. This can help with ensuring that those with depression will be provided with appropriate and timely help.

The UK government, on the other hand, has consulted on a green paper involving adolescent mental health. This particularly concentrates on early intervention and even recommends schools need to play a more central role.

Researchers say that many young people are uncertain where or even how to get help. They may also wonder if they ever really need help. Sarah Kendrick, of children’s mental health charity Place2Be, stated that over half of all mental health problems occur before the age of 14.

According to Dr. Rachel Zuckerbrot, a child psychiatrist and professor at Columbia University who authored the guidelines, teenagers are often more honest when they’re not looking somebody in the face. Dr Vikram Patel, professor of global health at Harvard Medical School, has revealed there was no global precedent for screening at such a young age.

The National Health Service in the UK often does not recommend the use of antidepressants in individuals below 18 years of age.

This is due to the fact that some evidence shows these medications have a potential to affect brain development, and even trigger suicidal thoughts.

Pharmaceutical drugs prescribed for depression may not work for everyone. However, it is important that sufferers are provided with the help they need.

Depression is widespread and is claiming a number of lives that are more than originally thought. There are many adults who succumbed to suicide because of the condition, and this is why it is imperative that sufferers are provided with the timely help they need.

Due to the side effects linked with the use of antidepressants, many scientists have been investigating on the potentials of safer alternatives.

Rhodiola rosea is one of these remedies, and it has a long history of medicinal use. It is being widely investigated now due to the range of health benefits it could potentially offer.

A study published in the journal called Phytomedicine has revealed that rhodiola was able to offer antidepressant benefits. More studies are still underway to validate the effects of rhodiola, but there are many people who use it through supplementation.

Divine Bounty Rhodiola Rosea is one formula that is gaining more and more attention from consumers (www.amazon.com/Rhodiola-Rosea-Supplement-Siberian-Salidroside/dp/B07416DYPB).
