(Newswire.net — January 13, 2019) — A teenage girl from Utah caused a chain crash because she took the “Bird Box Challenge” and drove a car blindfolded, KUTV reports.
The 17-year-old girl’s car drifted into oncoming traffic shortly after she pulled her hat down over her eyes while driving on a Layton highway on Monday afternoon. The driver who had a 16-year-old passenger later admitted to the police that she caused the incident following the “Bird Box Challenge” which requires driving without looking.
The stunt ended with her colliding with a car, a utility pole and, finally, a sound wall, but luckily no one was injured. The teen faces charges of reckless driving in which both cars involved in the incident were significantly damaged.
Netflix’s “Bird Box”, starring Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich, has been seen 45 million times in seven days, and its popularity inspired the “Bird Box Challenge” in which people with blindfolds try to perform dangerous tasks.
“Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes,” the tweet by Netflix reads.
People, however, are still doing the 24hrs Bird Box Challenge which teases you to do a daily routine blindfolded within next 24hrs after watch the movie. Various video clips of people taking the Bird Box Challenge flooded the internet and most of them are hilarious. Some daredevils are even recreating the river scene by recording themselves blindfolded in the bath.
The Bird Box Challenge, however, is equally dumb as it is dangerous.
The story of apocalyptic horror Bird Box follows Malorie (Sandra Bullock), a woman who is battling to survive with two children after a mysterious entity kills off most of the world’s population. After realizing that “a monster” leaves alone those who are not see it, the three starts journey to a safety blindfolded, which, among other, include running through a forest, rafting on a river and driving a vehicle.
