First Time Job Interview Tips

Rehearse

Having everything noted mentally is seemingly easy, but when you’re on the interview site and you start getting nervous, some of the answers may not come out exactly how you think they will. Practice all the answers and even your introduction. That way, you sound confident and relaxed. However, do not practice to the point that you sound robotic and unnatural during the interview.

Look Your Best

Dress appropriately for the job you want. Make sure your clothes are tidy and neat upon arrival. Most interviews it is best to come in business or business casual attire, with no wrinkles or stains (this means skip the pre-interview coffee in case of a spill). Although it may seem like no-brainer detail, don’t forget to come with good hygiene. Something about your appearance is going to catch the eye of the interviewer, so make sure everything is clean and neat from head to toe. It is best to keep makeup as minimal, clean and fresh as possible. Be sure to bring chapstick and moisturizer to avoid looking dry and dehydrated as well.

Body language is another very important aspect of your first impression that you need to be conscious of. Stand tall with shoulders back and chin up. This kind of posture allows the employer to see you’re confident and ready, not just for the interview but for the job you aspire to be hired for.

Research

In order to prepare for the upcoming questions, research the company’s basics before your interview. Really get to know who you’ll be working for and what you think you can bring to this kind of business. Make sure you understand their brand, motives, mission statement, goals, origin, etc. The more you know about the company, the easier it will be to understand how to answer the questions and how to sell yourself to the interviewer.

Basic Interview Questions

Be sure you know exactly how to have answers for the common interview questions. Know how to sell your strengths and weaknesses to your potential employer when they ask you what they are. Most likely they will ask you to tell them about yourself. When this question arises, they want to know what about yourself will work well with their brand and work ethic. List the skills and experiences you have that relate to the job requirements. Anything that will let the employer know you are the best fit for the position.

Have the Essentials

Bring a pen and notebook with you along with a copy of your resume and a list of questions YOU have for the company. Of course you may take notes on any information they tell you about the company before asking you initial questions, but if you’re lucky enough to be hired on the spot, you’ll need a notebook for further details on how to prepare for the first day, contact information and you’ll need your own pen to sign any hiring paperwork.

First and Last Two Sentences

Make the first two sentences you say to the employer impressionable. When you introduce yourself, shake hands, smile and thank the interviewer with excitement about the opportunity they’re giving you. When you’re leaving, have the same demeanor. Smile, shake hands and thank the interviewer for their time and consideration.

Send a Thank You Email

Whether you get the job or not, send everyone you interview with a thank you letter to show your gratitude to the employer for their time and consideration, as said before. This is important in the case that, the job opens up and they are looking to recruit interviewees that stood out to them. If you would like, you can ask them for some feedback on the interview, and what you can do to improve.

To Summarize

Job interviews can be nerve wracking and overwhelming. With the right materials and demeanor, you can make the most of your interview within the first 5 minutes, so make it count. As long as you rehearse, research and follow the rest of these first time job interview tips, you will make a great first impression.
