Atlanta has a vibrant and growing art scene and in April, art lovers and aficionados in the area are in for a treat. The new Fay Gold Gallery on Mangum Street is showing the works of Marlene Rose, one of the premiere studio glass artists in America, and early works of acclaimed photographer, Edward Mapplethorpe.
The exhibition is at 161 Mangum Street SW, Atlanta, GA. The opening is April 2nd from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Valet parking will be available
Gold, renowned for owning the most important contemporary art gallery in the South for 29 years, has transformed an1890’s railroad warehouse space into her latest art gallery. She has represented Rose for over a decade, but this will be the first time showing Rose’s studio glass sculpture work in this new space.
Rose is exhibiting her Cultural Tensions collection of glass sculptures, many of which are brand new. Some are still in the final stages of creation and will be unveiled for the first time at the exhibition opening.
Edward Mapplethorpe assisted his older brother Robert (1946-1989) in his studio throughout the 1980s. In 1983, Mapplethorpe launched his solo career establishing a distinct and personal style. His luminous nudes, portraits, still lives, and abstract works have been exhibited and collected throughout the United States, as well as in major cities around the world.
“Fay Gold is an Atlanta icon, and Edward Mapplethorpe’s photographs are utterly inspiring,” said Marlene Rose. “I believe that the essence of art is communication, and the identification and resolution of the forces of change pulling and pushing us in society today can be found in the rapturous search for beauty, a search held in common across all cultures and all times.”
