These candidates discussed a variety of issues- such as healthcare, immigration and foreign policy. But who stood out in the crowded debate?
Initially starting as a slow, friendly introduction to each candidate, the debate soon got fiery as candidates highlighted the divisions of the democratic party. Due to the incredibly crowded nature of the debate, contestants shouted over each other as an attempt to get air-time and voice their views.
These are the candidates that stood out in the first heat of the debates:
Elizabeth Warren:
Warren remained calm and poised during the contest in a bid to do no harm. Being part of the first debate, she was part of the lighter group, and therefore avoided most of the arguments.
As one of the only two democrats to raise her hand when asked if she supported getting rid of private insurance in favor of a government-run plan, Warren revealed the idea of ‘free medical care’ as a vital part of her manifesto. She described her idea of ‘Medicare-for-all’ as a ‘fundamental human right.’ Through her calm and stable position Warren did well in the debate, and managed to keep her poll numbers steady and rising.
Julian Castro:
Despite having a poll rating at a very meagre 1%, Castro managed to surprise everyone during the debate. In the first debate, Castro easily surpassed fellow competitor Beto O’rourke in a fight regarding immigration. Both of these democratic candidates battled it out regarding the removal of the Title 18 of Section 1325, a part of the U.S. code that makes entering the country illegally a misdemeanor.
Castro’s ‘People First’ plan would repeal this rule completely, turning illegal border crossing into a civil and not a criminal issue.
Trump’s response
Donald Trump, the current US president had very little to say regarding the first round of debate. Taking to his usual Twitter platform, Trump simply stated ‘BORING!’ in his typical blunt manner.
