Right season

The most dreadful and worst time to move your garden to another place is during the summer season. Dryness takes over the moisture during this season, and overexposure to sunlight can lead to acute damage to the plants. To make sure that your plants stay fresh and hydrated keep the roots away from direct sun exposure, wind or heat. Roots can desiccate very quickly leaving plants damaged and lifeless. Therefore, it is recommended to choose the right time of year to relocate these plants. Still, if you don’t have an option and you ought to move during the summer season, then make sure to take all the precautions to move all your plants from your garden in the right condition.

Mark the exact place where you intend to place your plants

No matter whether the new location is in the same premises or somewhere else, make sure to mark the spot where you intend to place the particular plant. Also, visually indicate the places before going ahead with digging, this exercise will help you to avoid any confusion at the time of plantation. Longer you will delay planting, higher are the chances that your plants will get damaged. Keep things ready beforehand, if you intend to plant the same in the pot then ensure that soil is dug enough to go to the bottom to nourish the roots. In case you are planning to move in summers then you can also douse and splash the spots with water before finally transferring the plants to the new location. However, if you are unsure about the place then you can also dig trenches and can plant roots in the same temporarily.

Keep the transportation ready

If you are transferring plants from ground to pot or from ground to ground at the same place, then you may skip this step but if you are transporting plant to ground to some far off location, then you may need to have certain receptacles to transport your plant safely and securely to new place. You can use the basic pots and buckets, however, they aren’t available you can always use the burlap to wrap the root ball. Already your plants are going through a lot while shifting, thus you must ensure that they are transported with utmost care and precautions. The entire process of transporting plants from one place to another must go as smoothly as it can.

The watering schedule for plants

The plants which are soon to be transported must have a special watering schedule. Don’t forget that is easier to remove the roots of the plants that are frequently watered. Make Sure to water the plants night before the movement to keep them hydrated. Hydration helps to sustain the jolt they may have while moving. Soak the roots well, also bottom of the plants must be submerged in water for at least two to three hours before replantation. Here are some of the bare root or naked plants which must be taken care of really well:

  • Fruit trees
  • Roses
  • Daylilies
  • Hosta
  • Shrubs, and
  • Prairie Onion

Cut off excess stems, if any

Before moving, it is recommended to cut the additional and excess stems and foliage which are dying. It will help your plant to reduce the trauma that it may get during the transition. However, it may not apply to all the plants and you may need to apply your personal judgment for the same.

Use drip line

Once you have successfully transported the plants it is time to dig the same into the base. But make sure to do it really carefully, else you may end up chopping the roots. Use hand shovel and start digging a ring around the area from where you intend to take out the plant. Digging ring around the plant us one of the careful ways to take out the plants appropriately at the right place. If plants are larger, you must dig at least six inches deep ring to plant carefully. Once you have dug the ring, use a shovel to pop the soil out to take out the plant carefully.

Re Plant

Once you have taken out the entire plant carefully, now it’s time to replant the same at its new destination. Make sure to plant the same as soon as possible as the longer you will wait higher are the chances that the plant will get damaged. Or you can place them at trenches till the time you place them at the final location, but keep watering the same to keep them hydrated and in good condition.

Once you have done the replantation, make sure to reduce the stress by providing them a little shower to cool down, also if possible try to provide shade to the plants, planted in direct sunlight for a couple of days. Keep watering your plants to provide proper nourishment to the plants.

Last but not least, if you find any leaf dropping water the same at the earliest to avoid any further damage.
