Signs of Apocalypse in Las Vegas as Huge Swarm of Locusts Invade the City

(Newswire.net — July 30, 2019) — Las Vegas is expecting another night of invading locusts. An entomologist from Nevada warned residents and visitors that the swarm will stay there for several more weeks.

Photographs and video clips showing grasshoppers began to appear on social networks this week. They can be seen jumping below casino lights and along the broad streets in front of hotels and other entertainment venues.

People are leaving comments on Twitter that they have encountered situations with insects similar to scenes from horror films, and they also mention quotes from the Bible about signs of the coming apocalypse.

An entomologist from Nevada, Jeff Knott, however, says that Vegas residents and visitors have no reason to worry. Grasshoppers do not transmit disease, or bite people, and probably will not cause damage to leaves, says Knight.

“We’ll have flights about this time of the year, migrations, and they’ll move northward,” Knight told CNN. “They just eat weeds” he added.

Knight estimates that it would probably take a few weeks for the locusts to leave the area.

He explains that it is a common desert type of locust with wings. Their great number is the result of the lasting damp during the winter and spring.

The grasshoppers are especially visible at night because they are attracted by the white ultraviolet lights in Las Vegas. Residents are advised to put yellow or weak white bulbs in front of their houses in order to keep them away from their homes.

A report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released in June included Nevada as one of the wettest states for the first five months of 2019 with rainfall nearly double what the national average usually is.

Similar locusts’ appearance in Las Vegas have occurred four or five times in the last 30 years.
