(Newswire.net — October 2, 2019) Orlando, FL — Today, this progressive and chronic disorder called Parkinson’s disease is highly prevalent. It is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system affecting the nerve cells in the brain.
According to the National Parkinson Foundation, there is an estimated number of one million individuals in the U.S. with this condition. Doctors reveal that it affects the nerve cells that take care of producing dopamine.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke warns that when these cells become impaired or die, dopamine loss results in abnormal nerve firings and impaired movements. These particularly include tremors, loss of balance, and other problems.
Rachel Dolhun, MD, neurologist and movement disorder specialist, says that Parkinson’s disease is not just an “old person’s disease”.
Dolhun is vice president of medical communications at the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
There are younger people diagnosed with this condition, such as those 40 years old and below.
It has not been determined yet what causes this condition. However, there are factors found to contribute to its onset.
According to Catherine Kopil, PhD, director of research programs for The Michael J. Fox Foundation, a combination of genetic and environmental factors are thought to contribute to the risk of getting Parkinson’s.
There are also experts who recommend that Parkinson’s disease may be linked with a deficiency of certain nutrients, such as vitamin B12.
Scientists suggest that reduced levels of vitamin B12 in individuals with early stages of Parkinson’s disease are associated with faster motor and cognitive decline. This only suggests that increased intake of the nutrient may aid in slowing the progression of these symptoms.
This study was published in the movement Disorders journal.
There are actually several previous studies showing that deficiencies in B12 are linked with Parkinson’s. Researchers suggest that deficiency could promote development of neurological and motor symptoms declines linked with the disease.
These include depression, paranoia, muscular numbness, and weakness.
Researchers from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) carried out a study. The investigators looked into the B12 levels of the subjects.
It has been found that roughly 13 percent of the participants had borderline low levels of B12. Further, 5 percent had a deficiency in vitamin B12.
The research team suggests that there was a rapid development of symptoms in individuals with reduced B12 levels than those with higher levels.
B vitamins have long been reputed to offer various brain health benefits. Formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex could work wonders in delivering the health benefits of B vitamins.
