Research Now Highlight Link Between Diet Drinks and Increased Heart Disease Risk

A study was published in the Stroke, which is the journal of the American Heart Association. 

The investigators of this study has almost 82,000 middle-aged and older American women as subjects. They were looking into the effects of artificially sweetened drinks on public health. 

This Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study tracked the subjects between 1993 and 1998. They were also made to complete ongoing medical exams and surveys about health, diet, and lifestyle in the study duration.  

Further, the researchers followed them for an average of 12 years for key outcomes like heart disease, stroke, and death. More particularly, they were looking into the effects of diet drink consumption and heart-health outcomes. 

It has been found that consumption of two or more diet drinks on a daily basis may increase the odds of heart disease, stroke, and death.

The researchers found that frequent diet drinkers had a heightened stroke risk by 23 percent, and a greater likelihood of heart disease by 29 percent. Further, they also had a greater risk of death by 16 percent.  

Among obese women, those who consumed diet drinks regularly had two-fold greater risk for ischemic stroke than those who rarely or never drank diet drinks.
