New Study Now Finds Exercise Won’t Ease Hot Flashes

(Newswire.net — April 30, 2020) Orlando, FL — During menopause, women usually experience symptoms like hot flashes. There are many remedies believed to be helpful in easing these symptoms. However, exercise may not be one of these remedies. 

Scientists carried out a study looking into 248 women who were either postmenopausal or approaching menopause. The subjects were divided into two groups, and one consisting of 106 participants took part in aerobic exercise training thrice a week for 12 weeks. 

It is worth mentioning that all of the subjects kept daily diaries tracking their sleep quality, insomnia, night sweats, hot flashes, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. 

The study findings reveal the exercise program had small positive effects on insomnia, sleep quality, and depression. However, it did not produce significant effect on hot flashes.  

It is further worth learning that in the exercise program, white women achieved some improvements in hot flashes than the white women who performed their usual activities. 

The difference was not observed in black women. 

According to Barbara Sternfeld, study author, midlife women cannot expect exercise to relieve [hot flashes and night sweats] but may reasonably expect it to improve how they feel and their overall health.

Sternfeld is from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research.
