For most people, the idea of working in your pajama’s from the comfort of your own home sounds like a dream. Sure, working from home has many benefits and perks- Both to the business and employee. However, it’s not for the faint of heart. Many people who work from home have to hold themselves accountable for their responsibilities rather than feeling the pressure of the business office environment. Working from home can be great for some people, but for others, it can turn into a disaster between the distractions and distance. So, how do you know who is a good work from home candidate? Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered!

Motivation

Being motivated is one of the single most important skills a person can have when working from home. Holding yourself accountable and being self-motivated to get the work done is crucial to the success of your work at home efforts. You can’t expect a non-motivated employee to go the extra mile just to get their work completed. That’s not an employee you want to work from home. Someone who cares about their job and takes their responsibilities and deadlines seriously will be the ideal candidate to work from home. If you try working from home and find yourself slacking off, don’t beat yourself up over it. Some people simply work better in the business office environment.

Communication

It’s a no brainer that communication is key to successful work at home efforts. If communication is essential in the office, it’s even more important when working from home. Without the verbal and visual communication you’d normally have in the office, a work at home employee needs to compensate with verbal communication. This includes being reachable and available to take calls, quick to answer emails, and simply being present and responsive. Thankfully, with the technology we have today, communication has never been easier. Employees working from home can take advantage of smartphone, Google Hangouts, Zoom meetings, and so much more.

Focus

Working from home comes with a million opportunities to become distracted- social media, TV, the doorbell ringing, maybe you have kids at home, etc. You can even find yourself cleaning during work hours if you take a quick “break” to throw the laundry in the wash. Next thing you know, a half-day or work has gone by and the emails have piled up. Being able to focus on work and ignore all the surrounding distractions is an essential part of working from home. Distractions at home are inevitable, just as they are in the office, but the difference is that at the office you have managers and other colleagues there to get you back on track and focused.

Computer Savvy

An additional skill that’s important to have is basic computer skills. You don’t have to be an information technology guru to work from home, but knowing how to reconnect to the internet or restarting your router is important to know. What if your screen freezes or you need to access Google Hangouts for a virtual meeting? There are many different obstacles a person can face when working from home and they’re easy to fix with basic computer skills. If you’re working from home and your computer starts acting up or the internet has a poor connection, it’s your responsibility to get back up and running to complete your tasks. Your company may have an IT department that can help over the phone but they can’t do much without being there. That’s why basic computer skills are important to have to work from home more seamlessly.
