Speaking in public can be one of the most difficult things that you can ever attempt to do. However with a little practice you will be able to develop your confidence and get up in front of a room full of people and make a speech. Even those who suffer from anxiety and fear issues can solve their problems just by applying a few very simple techniques.

Master Your Topic

One of the first things that you have to do is know the information that you are speaking about. Many people tend to become nervous when they are speaking in front of a crowd simply because they are not familiar with the information that they are presenting.

The one thing that you want to avoid is memorizing the information. If you attempt to memorize what you have to say word for word this will definitely end up making you even more nervous. If you allow yourself plenty of time to become familiar with your information then you will have no problem with discussing it. Many of the great keynote speakers invest a lot of time in mastering their topic so that they do not rely on having to memorize their speech.

Dealing With Criticism

Another thing that you can try is not thinking about what other people may say or think about your speech. Remember that all professional public speakers, even good ones, have critics. Sometimes these critics can be pretty cruel.

“Very often, many professionals spend too much time worrying about what others might say or think” says Sean Adams of MotivationPing.com. “The key to staying motivated on anything you do is just to focus on improving your craft and not get bogged down by what others have said or think about you.”

Practice At Home

Try a few practice runs at home with some of your family and friends. You can set your living room up similar to that of an auditorium or locating wills you are going to be speaking or performing. Then practice not just once but several times. Try to make eye contact with a close friend or relative while you are practicing. Many people who perform say they try to focus on several people in an audience who look as if they are enjoying what they are talking about or performing. This in turn helps them to feel more comfortable and to relax.

Don’t Focus On Your Mistakes

Try not to think about messing up, the more you focus on not making a mistake the larger the chances that you will probably end up making some kind of mistake. If you mess up then just continue on. If you start to notice that your voice is a little bouncy because of nerves, just take a deep breath and continue on.

Some people even bring pictures of calm and relaxing settings or a picture of a person that relaxes them in order to have something to look at when they are speaking. This helps them to relax and focus on what they have to get done. With a little practice you will be able to speak and or perform in public with more confidence and of course a lot less fear.
