Experts Now Reveal How Sleepless Nights Increase Pain

( — July 7, 2020) Orlando, FL — Doctors and even scientists have long been warning against inadequate sleep or sleep deprivation. According to experts, it doesn’t only increase the risk of diseases but also pain. 

A study was carried out and revealed that sleep loss may wreak havoc on the brain and worsen pain. 

According to study author Adam Krause, activity in the somatosensory cortex, previously associated with the location and intensity of pain, was enhanced following sleep loss.

Krause is a Ph.D. candidate with the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley.

“In two regions called the striatum and the insula, sleep deprivation decreased the activity associated with pain [relief],” he added.  

It is worth mentioning that these are regions that control the release of the feel-good hormone called dopamine. In this study, the investigators surveyed 60 adults in a span of 48-hour survey period.

During the survey period, all had reported suffering from pain. They were also required to report mood and anxiety levels, keep sleep diaries, and rank pain intensity.  

They found that decreases from one night to the next in the quality of sleep predicted worsening of pain the following day. 

More and more health experts are strongly stressing the importance of getting adequate sleep. There are many undesirable health consequences of sleep deprivation, and this is why it is best to get adequate sleep.

A study was carried out and published in the Journal of Neuroscience. 

In this study, the investigators found that curcumin use led to the protection of the subject mice from the symptoms of sleep deprivation. It is worth mentioning that the subjects were deprived of sleep for 72 hours.  

The researchers added that the use of curcumin extract for five days led to a significant prevention in the impairment in locomotor activity, anxiety-like effects and oxidative damage.
