(Newswire.net — July 8, 2020) — The United Kingdom has already seen over 44,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19, surpassing China where the virus originated. Residents and officials alike hope to slow the spread and prevent more deaths and negative health effects. While COVID-19 impacts the lungs and airways and not the mouth, the current outbreak and our attempts to contain it have both had an impact on dental appointments. Here is what customers need to know.
Multiple cities, states, and countries around the world are participating in a form of lockdown. “Stay At Home” and “Shelter In Place” orders have similar rules. Residents are urged to remain at home except for essential tasks such as purchasing groceries and supplies for family and pets, including medication. Failure to comply with the order could result in a fine in some jurisdictions.
“While medical treatment, including dental and mental health services, are allowed to remain open, these facilities have had to change the way they operate. When it comes to your dental health, non-emergency services such as dental exams, professional teeth whitening, implants, and routine cleanings may need to be postponed. Dental surgery and other emergency services are still available, however.” – Dental and Health Excerpts from Woodborough House Dental Practice
These steps are intended to keep the necessary distance between people. Of course, it’s not possible to maintain this distance between a dentist and a patient because they must access your mouth and teeth. However, our professional and experienced staff will wear personal protective equipment per usual. Patients should also maintain at least six feet of distance from patients and staff in waiting rooms and other common areas.
Studies have compared various mask materials, but for the general public, the most important consideration may be comfort. The best mask is one you can wear comfortably and consistently. N95 respirators are only necessary in medical situations such as intubation. Surgical masks are generally more protective than cloth masks, and some people find them lighter and more comfortable to wear.
The bottom line is that any mask that covers the nose and mouth will be of benefit.
If you feel ill, even if you have not tested positive for COVID-19, consider postponing any treatment unless it is absolutely an emergency to prevent others, including the staff or other patients at the dental office, from becoming sick as well.
Call your dentist today if you need to schedule an emergency procedure or postpone an appointment.
