How to Choose the Best Practice Ammunition

(Newswire.net — July 12, 2020) — Most of those who carry guns do so for self-defense, but there’s a whole different world relating to how difficult it could be for each person who wants to test their sharpshooting skills. Selecting the best ammo is best done when your choice aligns closest to what your mission is. This could mean the smallest difference in accuracy and precision that could make or break your shooting event.

The Concept in Selecting the Best Practice Ammo

Your ideal practice ammo can be selected in an effective and simple manner. It demands that you have chosen your competition shooting load and that you mean to stick with it. Whatever round you have confidence in, is what needs to be compared and contested.

Your exact caliber is not as important as the process by which you select the best round for it is. Therefore, don’t worry as much about it being a be-all, end-all brand evaluation. The test must be completed from the same firearm for all types of ammo that is tested. Each gun that you intend to compete with will need its own comparison for comparable ammunition accuracy, even if they are of the same or similar caliber.

Preparing the Test

You won’t need too many different items to perform your ammo test. Start with a single, simple piece of white poster board. Mark your poster board with four Xs with a black marker. Make sure that you make them large enough to spot at the distance you are attempting to shoot from. Above each black X, note the name of the cartridge, so you won’t forget which you used and where. Mark the target distance and wind/environmental conditions on the upper-left corner so you will have a record for your performance.

The key is to replicate the range at which you are attempting to compare while also keeping effective track of consistent bullet placement, rangefinder scopes can be very helpful while you’re determining the right range. If you go too close in, you won’t be able to gauge the subtle effects that the ammo could have as it travels downrange. If you go too far out, you might have too much wind effect, and you won’t be accurately replicating the purpose of the test.

Mental Focus for the Test

At this time, push out any ideas about what you’d imagine an ammo demonstration or shooting competition is like. This isn’t to see how amazingly you’ll shoot. This test is to evaluate your ammunition and how you shoot at the present moment at your current level.

Performing the Test

Start by shooting five rounds into the upper-left X. Make sure that all the rounds are the same. This isn’t a fast-fire contest, so take a steady aim and be mindful when shooting.

When you have at least five rounds on target, back off your firearm and let it rest a bit while you evaluate the results. After a few minutes, load your next ammo to test and aim for a different X. Ideally, you’ll want to allow your gun to cool a bit before each load is shot because heat impacts accuracy.

Cycle through all of your testing ammo to see what will replicate your competitive loadout the best, or to discover what your best bet is for winning the competition overall.

Completing the Test

When you see a tight enough cluster, make sure to mark your poster board. Repeat the experiment so that you can prove that this wasn’t just a fluke-day at the range. If the ammo that was the most consistent is still the most consistent after two or three more rounds of testing, then you have a high probability of having found the ideal ammunition for your competitive shooting needs and that specific firearm.

Since this is a process of elimination, cycle through the ammo brands and any home-brewed loads. Consistently using the most precise and accurate rounds will guarantee that you’re maximizing your competitiveness.
