The launch of Neary Lagoon’s new website gives both area residents and tourist information about this park in Santa Cruz to the residents and tourists. The park is located at 110 California Street and can be contacted by calling (831) 420-5270. It is an excellent location to take children for an educational field trip during these days of the coronavirus.
The parks features include wildlife refuge, pollinator gardens, two playgrounds, greenbelt trails, tennis courts, basketball half-court, BBQ pits, access to Neary Lagoon via floating boardwalks. Neary Lagoon offers three distinct surfaces: Sand, Grass, and Asphalt. There is a restroom conveniently located at California St. & Bay St. There are no dogs allowed, and parking is limited to California St. & Bay St.
This wetland provides rainwater storage to reduce flooding and filter pollutants. In addition to the practical use of this wetland visitors have seen many different types of wildlife. Birding opportunities abound and include sightings of wood ducks, pied-billed grebes, coots, geese, herons, hawks, belted Kingfishers, soras, Virginia rail, Rufous-sided towhee, black phebe, tree swallows, hermit thrush, western tanager, yellow-rumped warbler, ruby-crowned kinglet, and Wilson’s warbler.
Under the water native Sacramento suckers, prickly sculpins, rainbow trout, non-native largemouth bass, bluegill, carp, mosquito fish, and the famous Western Pond Turtle abound.
A recent visitor shared, “This is a unique little wetlands park There’s a trail about a mile in length, part of which is a wooden pontoon system which allows you to walk directly over the lagoon. Waterfowl are abundant. In a short visit, I saw mallards, wood ducks, coots, grebes, and herons.”
