Are dual diagnosis treatment centers the better choice?

When we think of “rehab” we usually just associate it with substance abuse or alcoholism. However there are actually a few different types of treatment centers that treat two totally different things. So how do you know what type of treatment is better for you? We like to think going to treatment is a way of maintaining your body. You’re taking steps to live a healthier drug free life. So why would you not take care of your mental health while you are at it.

You may be wondering what the difference is between substance abuse treatment and mental health treatment and how can you effectively treat someone who is categorized as a dual diagnosis patient.

What is substance abuse treatment?

When you are battling a drug or alcohol addiction you normally go to treatment to deal with the issues. At a substance abuse treatment center you can expect to get intense therapy, learn coping skills, and learn how to live a healthy life without drugs and alcohol. But can we live a healthy life if we are only trying to fix our addiction issue and not looking equally on the mental side?

What is mental health treatment?

Dealing with mental health issues can be horrendous, not just for us, but for those around the person suffering with mental health. Mental health issues include Bi polar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, chemical imbalances, multiple personalities, and the list goes on. Many people who suffer from mental health issues do not suffer from drug addiction. So going to a substance abuse treatment center would not be the most ideal. In fact it would be pretty much a waste of time.

What is dual diagnosis?

Having a substance abuse problem is already draining but combining  substance abuse and a mental health issue together is even worse. Unfortunately many people who suffer from addiction also suffer from some type of mental health issue.

Darren K a therapist who specializes in a dual diagnosis treatment Los Angeles said that “Unfortunately many people with an addiction issue also suffer from a mental issue. We use drugs or alcohol to cover up the mental health issues and never take care of them causing them to just keep getting worse.” And that is honestly so true. We do not want to deal with life sometimes, and we feel like life just keeps getting worse, so we use drugs to cover it up. When at a dual diagnosis treatment center you can expect to get both issues taken care of, And learning new coping skills for both your addiction and mental health, learning how to live everyday without the use of drugs as well as how to deal and live as normally as possible with mental health.

How do I know which one is right for me?

When choosing a treatment facility it is first the best idea to know what you are going for. We highly recommend that if you are going to treatment for substance abuse that you pick a dual diagnosis treatment center. Reason being is that now you are taking the drugs and alcohol out of your life, you are going to start getting emotions and things are going to start coming up for you. You want to ensure that you are learning how to deal with addiction as well as mental health. And to be able to treat two things at ones means that you can go back to living a healthy normal life.

If you or a loved one is suffering from a substance abuse issue or a mental health issue, we urge you to seek help. You are always able to change your life for the better.
