Epoxy floor coatings are two-part coatings that have a resin and a hardener. These two parts that have to be properly mixed and applied before the hardener sets. It requires that care be taken to only mix those quantities that can be applied immediately to a floor that has been properly prepared to receive the coating. It is important that before you apply an epoxy coating to any concrete floor, that you inspect the floor for any cracks or defects and make the necessary repairs. It can also be a good time to correct any level of defects through the use of self-levelling preparations.

Before application of the coating, make sure the floor is completely dried out, especially if you have undertaken any repairs that have needed curing. Epoxy will not bond to floors that have been sealed or are polished, and you may need to remove the sealants and create a slight roughness on polished concrete so that the epoxy can bond to the surface. Some manufacturers of these paints may require you to add primers to surfaces and it is best to follow the manufacturer’s instructions in this regard.

Epoxies do not dry like paint where the solvent evaporates, but actually go through a process of curing that hardens through a chemical reaction of its two different components.  This process requires at least twenty-four hours. Choose the right epoxy so that it suits the surface on which it is being applied and will also be suitable for the conditions that the floor will be subject to.
