Right Under Our Noses, Online Advertising Is Changing Completely

(Newswire.net — November 17, 2020) — We don’t need to tell you that the way people are exposed to advertisements and the way these ads affect them constantly changes over time. What you should know, though, is that numbers are showing some drastic changes in 2020 relating to the effectiveness of online advertising, and we do not recommend underestimating the importance of these numbers.

Let’s take a look at some of the data, but first – the inevitable conclusion: We’ve got to change the way we perceive online advertising. What was true and trendy just 12 months ago can now seem close to irrelevant. The need to keep reinventing yourself has always been there, but now it’s essential more than ever. If you’re making money off of advertising online, it’s time to do things differently. Don’t believe us? See for yourself.

Gone are the days of ‘Pay Per View’

Google promises you more clicks if you turn a regular, organic search result into a Google Ad, which lands a prime location on the search results page. However, between 70 and 80 percent of searchers ignore and avoid the sponsored content. And don’t be mistaken, this is probably not done unintentionally. Sponsored search results are displayed in a way that makes you understand they’re sponsored, so the tendency not to click them can certainly be interpreted as a sign of mistrust. Does that mean you shouldn’t use Google Ads anymore? Not necessarily. It just means you need to think twice about how you do it.

Fade to Block

Remember when AdBlock was a new concept? That was way back in 2004 a lot has changed since then. Today, about 1 in every 4 Americans uses AdBlock or some other ad blocking software while surfing, and globally that data is closer to 1 in every 3 surfers. But that’s not all, since these numbers are expected to rise. This means that ‘traditional’ online advertising methods are no longer as effective as they used to be – if you can’t see the huge banner on the front page, there’s no reason to pay so much money from it. On the other hand, the big tech giants are already starting to fight back. YouTube, for example, is already giving AdBlock users some trouble.

Email empathy

It may seem hard to believe, but in a recent survey, 6 out of every 10 people reported that they actually read the promotional emails they have subscribed for. If you thought the days of newsletters and email marketing were gone, think again. Compare this to the lower amount of people who agree to receive this type of content via SMS or by phone, and you’ll understand that email marketing is far from being irrelevant these days, despite it being considered ‘old fashioned’.

‘Stop & shop’? More like ‘shop & stop’

Almost 70% of people who start filling up an online shopping cart, never make it to the payment page. That’s right, most people who do online shopping this way will probably abandon the process without paying for anything – and more than 90% of them never return to that cart. Does this mean that people do not like long internet shopping processes? Perhaps. It probably also means that when someone wants to buy something from your website, trying to sell them more stuff on the way is not always the smartest thing you can do.

Go traditional

If there’s anything to be learned from these findings, it’s that traditional online marketing methods are making some kind of a comeback. If people prefer buying single items over filling up a cart, if people want to get email updates, if people do not rely on Google Ads and the likes, maybe it’s time to retry what was popular once.

One of these systems is called lead generation. People advertise services or products without trying to sell them, but rather to identify potential buyers. Then, they take the information those potential buyers supply (such as their email address or phone number) and use them to get in touch and complete a purchase more directly at a later phase.

This combination of traditional and new is changing the way people advertise online. With the growing popularity of lead generation, digital marketing companies such as Crystalead and others offer platforms where anyone can simply create these lead generation campaigns. In fact, you don’t have to be a business looking for clients. You can also serve as a kind of middleman, and to collect data in the form of leads for businesses in return for a commission from Crystalead and others.
