Tennessee’s General Assembly once again rewrote the child support guidelines in 2020. The new guidelines increase the complexity of Tennessee’s Child Support laws and retained the court’s sentencing power to incarcerate an individual who willfully fails to pay child support.
Wykoff & Sikes provides expert guidance in child support cases in three particular circumstances. First, for the establishment of an initial order establishing your child support obligation, which unless agreed upon requires a trial before a judge. Wykoff & Sikes helps to gather the evidence necessary to ensure that the child support obligation is calculated reflecting true earning ability, health insurance expenses, work related childcare expenses, and any recurring uninsured medical expenses for the children.
In the second circumstance, when the other parent is not meeting their child support obligation, Wykoff & Sikes can help file a proper petition to hold that individual responsible and properly calculate the past due arrearage. In the state of Tennessee, child support arrearage accrues interest at 6% annually, and Wykoff & Sikes can help clients collect those additional funds.
Third, Wykoff & Sikes can provide representation when modifications need to be made to a child support obligation. In addition to filing the petition for modification, Wykoff & Sikes will help prepare you to testify and organize exhibits for trial whether the modification request is for an increase or decrease in child support obligation.
Wykoff & Sikes earned the Avvo Clients’ Choice Award in 2016 for child support law.
In addition to child support, Wykoff & Sikes offers expertise on bankruptcy, custody, DUI defense, family law mediation, personal injury, and social security disability.
Wayne Wykoff and Cort Sikes, the two attorneys at the firm, together bring 42 years of experience of practicing law. Mr. Wykoff was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1993 and Mr. Sikes in 2005.
A satisfied child support client says, “Wayne Wykoff and Cort Sikes have been amazing through our custody case. They have always kept us informed and also helped us to see the whole picture. They have given us more guidance in a short period of time than our previous lawyer did in 3 years.”
