( — January 25, 2021) Orlando, FL — Phobias are generally believed to produce a range of undesirable consequences. One is food neophobia, which pertains to the fear of new foods.

This is according to a study carried out by the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Tartu in Estonia.

In this research, it has been found that food neophobia may result in poor dietary quality as well as the increase in the risk factors linked with chronic diseases. These have been found to increase the risk of developing lifestyle diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Experts note that food neophobia is an eating behavior characterized by a person’s refusal to taste and consume food items or foods they are not familiar with.

The researchers looked into the independent effects of the eating behavior involving individuals aged between 25 and 74 years in the Finnish FINRISK and DILGOM cohorts and an Estonian biobank cohort during a seven-year follow-up.

The findings have shown that food neophobia is associated with poorer dietary quality. For instance, consumption of protein, fibre, and monounsaturated fatty acids may be lower and intake of salt and saturated fat is greater in food neophobic people.

The researchers have further found that there was a significant correlation between food neophobia and adverse fatty acid profile as well as increased level of inflammatory markers in blood.
