Researchers Warn Antibiotics May Affect Gut Flora Long-Term

(Newswire.net — August 2, 2021) Orlando, FL — Antibiotics are a popular treatment for urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, this type of medication is also notoriously known for the side effects it cause.

A study was carried out ad published in Microbiology.

In this research, it has been found that short courses of antibiotic may trigger the normal gut bacteria to harbor antibiotic resistance genes for up to two years after treatment.

The researchers theorize that this reservoir enhances the odds of resistance genes being surrendered to pathogenic bacteria, and this helps in their survival.

The findings of this study suggest that long-term effects of antibiotic therapy are more significant than previously thought.

It is worth noting antibiotics have the ability to alter the composition of microbial populations, which may potentially increase the risk of having diseases. Further, the medication also allows micro-organisms that are naturally resistant to the antibiotic to flourish.

This review suggests that antibiotic therapy has long-term impacts, which doesn’t coincide with previous studies showing the short-term effects of antibiotics.

According to Dr Cecilia Jernberg, the consequences of this could be potentially life-threatening.

Dr. Jernberg is from the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control who conducted the review.

“The long-term presence of resistance genes in human gut bacteria dramatically increases the probability of them being transferred to and exploited by harmful bacteria that pass through the gut,” she adds.

This, according to the findings of this research suggest that it could lessen the success of future antibiotic treatments. It could also potentially lead to new strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The alarm against antibiotic misuse and overuse continues to ring. Experts have long been recommending for consumers to take some effective steps in warding off infections like urinary tract infections (UTIs).

It is important to note that one of the major reasons why antibiotic use is widespread is the skyrocketing rates of infections like UTIs. This is why it is imperative to take measures in reducing the odds of this infection.

The good news is that some all-natural remedies like a therapeutic sugar called D-mannose may be helpful. This therapeutic ingredient has long been researched on due to its ability to ward off UTIs.

It is even used as a safer alternative to antibiotics. Today, formulas like Divine Bounty D-mannose are widely resorted to by individuals who are prone to or already suffering from recurrent UTIs.

There are many brands available in the market but this one from Divine Bounty is popularized by its high potency and the added ingredients it contains (amazon.com/D-Mannose-600mg-Cranberry-Dandelion-Extract/dp/B01LX5KGF0).
