Study Shows Why Arteries Age and Its Link to the Gut Bacteria

( — April 15, 2021) Orlando, FL — Experts have long revealed that coronary arteries work in delivering blood to the heart muscle. Issues affecting them or any coronary artery disorder may produce serious complications.

Health authorities warn it could lead in lessened flow or nutrients and oxygen to the heart muscles. There are various factors affecting the functions and well-being of the arteries. 

A study was carried out by the researchers from University of Colorado Boulder.

In this research, it has been found a gut-produced compound is damaging to the arteries and may increase the odds of heart disease as one ages. This compound is produced upon red meat consumption.

The findings of this interesting research were published in Hypertension, which is the American Heart Association journal. 

The investigators further suggest that certain dietary changes and targeted therapies may be helpful in preventing or reversing this age-related decline. 

According to first author Vienna Brunt, their work shows for the first time that not only is this compound directly impairing artery function, it may also help explain the damage to the cardiovascular system that naturally occurs with age.

Brunt is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Integrative Physiology.

It is important to note that the resident gut bacteria get to work immediately upon consumption of a slab of steak or a plate of scrambled eggs by breaking them down. While amino acids are metabolized, a metabolic byproduct called trimythylamine is also churned out.

Experts say that the liver then converts trimethylamine to trimethylamine-N-Oxide (TMAO) and sends coursing through your bloodstream. It is important to note that in previous research studies, individuals with increased blood levels of TMAO are found to be more than twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke.

They are also at the increased odds of premature death. 

More studies are still being carried out to investigate on the various aspects of heart health. It is also worth noting that some kitchen ingredients like lion’s mane may be potentially helpful.
