Study Highlights Link in Between Poor Sleep and Poor Cognitive Functioning

A study was carried out and published in the Acta Diabetologica journal.

In this research, it has been found that individuals with prediabetes and diabetes with lower sleep efficiency have poorer cognitive function compared to those with better sleep efficiency. Reutrakul is associate professor of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism in the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine and corresponding author on the paper.

Previous research studies have shown a link in between diabetes and cognitive impairment as well as an increased odds of dementia. There have also been other studies showing the association in between sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. 

It is worth realizing that sleep disturbances are common in individuals with diabetes.

In this research, the investigators looked into the link in between sleep and cognitive function in those with abnormal glucose tolerance. This refers to patients suffering from an impairment in glucose tolerance indicative of prediabetes, as well as those with clinically diagnosed diabetes.

It involved a total of 162 subjects, 81 of whom were with Type 2 diabetes and 81 with prediabetes. Further, the average age of the participants was 54.8 years. The investigators looked into the sleep duration and sleep efficiency of every participant through seven-day actigraphy recordings.

“Our study shows that lower sleep efficiency is independently associated with lower cognitive function in patients with abnormal glucose tolerance,” said Reutrakul. “Further studies should look at whether helping these patients sleep better could improve cognitive function.”
