The launch of Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation therapy offers people who suffer with obstructive sleep apnea an alternative to treatments such as Continuous Positive Air Pressure(CPAP) and surgery. Many patients for whom other treatments have not worked have found Inspire to be effective.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a potentially serious sleep disorder where the muscles in the throat intermittently relax too much and block the airway during sleep. This can occur 30 times an hour and prevent the patient from reaching deep and restful sleep. If left untreated it may be associated with hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, depression and daytime sleepiness. OSA also causes snoring which can be disruptive to bed partners.

Inspire therapy is the first implantable device for treating OSA. In contrast to CPAP which requires patients to wear a face mask, Inspire works from inside the body using the patient’s natural breathing process. While you are asleep the device continually monitors breathing patterns and delivers a mild stimulation to the nerve that controls the muscles in the airway. This prevents the airway becoming blocked and allows normal breathing to take place.

The device is controlled with a small hand-held remote and no mask or hose is needed. The patient simply turns the device on before going to sleep and turns it off again when they wake. Inspire therapy helps patients take control of their apnea and gives them the restful sleep they have been missing.

Inspire therapy is clinically proven to be safe and is FDA approved. Research shows that patients experience up to 78% reduction in sleep apnea events per hour and up to 82% reduction in snoring. Patients report reduced sleepiness in the daytime, increased activity levels and improved quality of life for themselves and their families.
