According to the ATS Patient Education Fact Sheet on the disease, people with COPD must work harder to breathe, which can lead to shortness of breath and/or feeling tired.
“We show that the effects are minimal at most even in people with very severe lung impairment,” said Dr. Campos.
The investigators also reveal that wearing of a face mask leading to dyspnea experienced by some people is not the same with alterations in gas exchange. It is worth noting that dyspnea pertains to the feeling of shortness of breath.
They suggest it likely happens from restrictions of air flow with the mask in particular when higher ventilation is needed, such as during exertion.
