Scientists Now Link Western Diet With Chronic Liver Inflammation

(Newswire.net — May 31, 2021) Orlando, FL — An increasing number of studies are looking into the effects of various eating patterns. These include the Western diet, which many researchers believe may not be healthy.

A study was recently carried out and published in The American Journal of Pathology.

In this study involving mouse subjects, it has been found that Western diet led to hepatic inflammation, particularly in males. It is particularly worth stressing that the Western diet in the study involved one high in fat and sugar.

It is further worth mentioning that liver inflammation was particularly noticeable in Western diet-fed male mice lacking farnesoid x receptor (FXR), a bile acid receptor.

This study is significant considering that diet is associated with changes in the gut microbiota as well as bile acid profile. This opens up the possibility that probiotics may be useful in the prevention and treatment of hepatic inflammation.

They may also come in handy in stopping the progression into advanced liver diseases such as cancer.

According to Dr. Wan, these studies show that a Western diet intake and FXR inactivation also increased hepatic inflammatory signaling, with a combined enhanced effect.

Yu-Jui Yvonne Wan, PhD, is lead investigator Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UC Davis Health.

“Our data show that diet, gender, and different antibiotic treatments alter the gut microbiota as well as bile acid profile and have different effects on liver inflammation,” she adds.

Scientists have been carrying out studies to look into the benefits of probiotics, especially against inflammation. A new study has even demonstrated that these good bacteria may reduce inflammation levels inside the body.

This means it could also be useful for chronic liver inflammation as well as other inflammatory diseases like ulcerative colitis.

Researchers have long been suggesting that an imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in our guts can result in uncomfortable symptoms or illnesses.

Scientists also suggest that some probiotics work in producing varying beneficial responses from the immune system.

Intake of these beneficial bacteria may be extremely helpful for individuals who want to reduce inflammation levels in their body. It is also worth mentioning that probiotics may be significantly helpful for various medicinal purposes.
