(Newswire.net — June 7, 2021) Orlando, FL — Animals like pets have long been studied due to their remarkable healing benefits to humans. However in a study, it has been found working with them may not at all be advantageous.

This research has shown that individuals who work with animals, like veterinarians, encounter stressors that may contribute to compassion fatigue, poor mental health, and burnout.

This research was presented at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association.

The investigators of this study have particularly highlighted that veterinarians as well as volunteers at animal shelters are confronted with stressors that place them at a heightened risk of anxiety, depression, and even suicide.

According to Angela K. Fournier, PhD, from Bemidji State University, people who work or volunteer with animals are often drawn to it because they see it as a personal calling.

A study was carried out and published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

It has been found that veterinarians are at an increased risk of death by suicide. This study was based on data from 1979 and 2015 that has shown veterinarians died due to suicide between 2 to 3.5 times more often compared to the general U.S. population.

The investigators suggest that this could be due to a combination of factors like professional demands, personality traits, and veterinary learning environment.

Today, more and more researchers are carrying out studies to look into the various aspects of mental health. It is important to realize that today, there are quite a number of people who suffer from conditions like anxiety and depression.

These mental health issues do not just reduce overall quality of life and health but also increases suicide risk.

Scientists continue to investigate into the various ways to help reduce the rates of mental illness. Many studies have shown that certain all-natural remedies like the use of probiotics may be beneficial for certain mental health issues.

This is due to the fact that probiotics work wonders in improving gut health, and this is how it could fight the symptoms of certain mental health issues.
