(Newswire.net — July 16, 2021) Orlando, FL — Researchers have long been studying the disease-fighting benefits of eating patterns like the Mediterranean diet. Some studies looked into its effects on painful and incurable conditions like arthritis.
Today, rheumatoid arthritis is second to osteoarthritis as the most common type of arthritis in the United States.
About 1.5 million people in the country suffer from the condition. It is more common in women and although it has not been known exactly why it is believed to have something to do with hormones.
Rheumatoid arthritis is different from osteoarthritis and this is due to the fact that it is not a wear and tear disease. Further, it impacts small joints in the wrists, hands, and feet, unlike osteoarthritis that affects the weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees.
It has not been understood quite well what causes this condition, but this autoimmune disease is thought to have something to do with genetic predisposition and environmental exposure.
There are many people subjected to a reduced quality of life due to the condition. This disease continues to affect many people and causes disability, which often results in unemployment.
A study was carried out and published in Arthritis & Rheumatology.
In this research, the Mediterranean diet has been found to help individuals with rheumatoid arthritis who smoke or used to smoke.
The study included 62,629 women from France who have been participating in a questionnaire-based study evaluating dietary intake since 1990. Overall, 480 women suffered from rheumatoid arthritis.
Previous research has shown the link between certain health benefits and the Mediterranean diet, which is loaded with fruits, vegetables, cereals, olive oil, fish, and a moderate amount of dairy, meat, and wine.
In the study, the investigators revealed that adherence to the Mediterranean diet was not linked with the overall decrease of rheumatoid arthritis risk overall. However, it was linked with a reduced risk in women who smoked or used to smoke.
Further, there were 383 cases of rheumatoid arthritis every 1 million people annually among those who had close adherence to the Mediterranean diet. It was compared to the 515 cases per 1 million people per year among those with low adherence to the diet.
Researchers are increasingly studying the benefits of taking some measures to reduce the severity or susceptibility of arthritis. There are nutrients like B vitamins found to significantly reduce markers of inflammation, and this is helpful for those with the condition.
